Alex Solis

Alex Solis Interview

A short introduction to yourself. Who is Alex Solis?

I’m a graphic designer for my career, I do most of my illustration work on the side, hopefully one day I’ll be doing illustration full time!

How is your creative process and which techniques or methods do you use?

I do a ton of my current work digitally using photoshop and a cintiq, but I do take breaks often to use traditional tools, like the good ol paper and pencil, and love experimenting with different brushes. I’ll be doing some bigger murals soon as well!

We love your Famous Chunkies. What inspire you to create them? Do you have any favourite?

While watching a Ninja Turtles cartoon with my daughter, we kept making fun of them and asking how they are so fast and in shape when their diet consists mainly of pizza. I felt like it was sending the wrong message to kids, and I noticed a lot of others cartoons did the same thing. At first I started the project with the intention of just creating that one illustration, but it was too much fun to stop there! It’s a good way to raise awareness about unhealthy eating, especially with young kids. It catches their attention quickly.

I think my favorite one at the moement is Batman, because its simple and iconic.

You work in one of the favorite companies for many t-shirts designers: Threadless. How does it feel working there?

At the moment I’m doing tons of design work for the homepage and challenges, working there has inspired me to do a lot more of my own work as well, and gained some lifetime friends as well as met amazing artists from all over the world.

Big clients like Disney, Marvel, Pepsi, New Balance or McDonalds are in your professional portfolio, among others. Do you think your ideas and creativity are limited by them?

I think it’s also a good way to push the limits of what they have set and try to push some ideas, I see it more as a challenge then limitations to creativity.

Any advice or tips to up and coming designers? Especially to t-shirt designers.

Don’t give up too easily, keep working more and more, and for t-shirts specially no idea is too silly! I have silly ideas often, that I never follow through with, then see them done by someone else in the future and do amazing!
